Insert or No Insert
I'm excited to report that the tatting of the Norma Benporath Mystery Cake Doyley is complete. I'm seriously torn about whether to add the motif to the center. Norma provides enough instruction in the pattern that I think I could create the cutout behind the center medallion. Two things make me reluctant to finish it as Norma intended. Firstly, Mom will not use it as a cake doily and may be reluctant to sit anything on it that might hide the center medallion. Secondly, I'm concerned that I chose such a small fabric circle that the motif is a bit too large by comparison. So I'm asking you for your input. I confess, though, that there is a part of me that wants to see it through so that it is a good reproduction of what Norma tatted for her original pattern.

It's really pretty. I think no insert. Just my vote though.
I like it without the insert - more practical if one wants to place something over it. However, once the fabric is cut out, there will definitely be a better lacy feel to the entire doily (the medallion sitting atop the fabric does not give the correct picture). An insert would look nice when/if the doily is draped too.
My final decision would depend on the usage & display of this doily. Either way, it looks Gorgeous & resplendent.
May be you could hold off with the insertion for now & ask your Mom what She would like ?
I personally agree with muskaan!! :)
Great job on the project!!! :)
I also agree with muskaan. It is a beautiful doily however you finish it.
It's spectacular without the insert, but I do like the idea of going the whole hog!
I like it both ways. That said, I know I would go with the insert for my home.
I would leave it blank I prefer it without the motif in the middle

If you feel confident that you can turn back or finish the edges for the center to drop the insert that would be nice. If you do, then to me a clear glass, up on a pedestal cake stand is what I would have to buy to go with.
I do love you perfect work, and just plain is a treasure too, but there is the side of me that does want replicas too! So I do understand the this problem :)
