Some Easy Tatting & Catherine Wheel Join Spider

My grandson requested I make him a tatted spider, so I combined the project
with my need to work on my Catherine Wheel Join before getting back to work on filet tatting. I figured out what I was doing wrong last weekend which is good. There is no pattern for the spider. I just made it up as I went along with a little help. Nik chose the colors and decided on leg placement.
Motif #13 for 2nd 25 Motif Challenge of 2016
Size 20, black Flora and yellow/while/gold variegated Manuela
Body is about 1.5 inches long

Motifs #14 and #15 for 2nd 25 Motif Challenge of 2016
size 20 hand-dyed thread by Heather Johnston

I've had this thread for years. It's probably a size 5. I noticed though that it isn't colorfast. Any tips for making it so?

fun little do dads but the spider should be placed out side :)

That's a super cure spider ! Love the paper clip adornments, too.
My guess is that it is only the extra dye that is running off the thread. Yoiu could soak it in salty water for a few hours, then rinse with diluted vinegar . I also remember somebody posting (with pics) on their blog how they soaked a blue fabric in undiluted vinegar to finally get the colour to stop running.
Or simply use the thread for scrap projects / practice tatting.

Great little spider! Like muskaan, I was thinking that the color running from the thread is probably excess dye that hadn't been thoroughly rinsed. I don't have any tips though, as I've never worked with dyes myself.

Great spider, at least it's not real, because I would be running a mile,
Love the paper clips, I like the pansy petal, I would what it would look like with several joined together
I can only agree with muskaan over the dye

Cute spider! However, I'd be more inclined to tat the paper clip beauties, though.

Nice spider! To a CQer and embroiderer, spiders have a reputation for good luck, so I like the tatted, beaded, and embroidered ones. The real ones can stay outside. ;-)

It's interesting to me that he is terrified of spiders, but was eager to have a tatted one. My youngest daughter has helped from an early age to catch garden spiders who've mistakenly made their way into the house so we can place them back outdoors. We do it carefully so we don't have to touch them, but I appreciate the efforts spiders and those insects that keep the biting and stinging bug population down. I don't care for fleas, ticks, mosquitos, etc.

Thanks, muskaan, for the thread dye tips. I'll give them a try. I've been so busy this week that they are still sitting on the dining room table.

Eliz, I've been wanting to add a note of caution, but haven't been online for a couple of days - what I detailed related to fabric. I'd wait for Jane McClellan's advice before starting anything - she dyes her threads & wool, so she's the one who really knows how it'll work with your thread.
Always happy to see you online :-)
